Cyber crime is when someone does illegal things using computers, mobile phones, the internet, social media, or other digital tools. Some common examples are stealing money online, taking someone's identity, breaking into accounts, tricking people with fake emails or messages, creating fake profiles on social media, being mean online, or getting into someone's account without permission.

More people are using digital services for banking, shopping, and talking to others, so it is very important to know how to report cyber crime.

1.

Common Types of Cyber Crime

Cyber crime can happen in many ways, such as:

- Fraud in online banking or using UPI

- Fake emails, messages, or links that try to get your personal information

- Breaking into someone’s account without permission

- Stealing someone's identity and using their information

- Harassment or pretending to be someone else on social media

- Threatening someone online or blackmailing them

- Using fake websites, apps, or ads to steal money

- Taking or using someone's digital information without their permission

Depending on what happened, different parts of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and other criminal laws may apply.

The IT Act covers many crimes and wrongdoings related to computers and electronic data.

2.

Report Cyber Crime Online

The Government of India has a special website called the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal where you can tell them about cyber crime.

When you report something online, the local police in the area you are in will look into it.

If you are a victim of online financial fraud, it is very important to report it quickly.

The government also gives the number 1930 as a helpline for reporting cyber fraud.

3.

What Information Should You Keep?

Before you report a cyber crime, make sure to save as much evidence as you can, like:

- Screenshots of messages or websites

- Phone numbers, email addresses, or social media profiles involved

- Transaction IDs and bank details related to the fraud

- The dates and times when the crime happened

- Copies of emails or any suspicious links

- Screenshots of payment confirmations

- Details of the person suspected, if you know who it is

Do not delete any messages, emails, transaction records, or other digital proof that might be useful.

4.

Contact Your Bank Quickly

If you lost money through an online scam, you should immediately call your bank or payment service and tell them about the fraudulent transaction.

Also, report the incident using the official cyber crime reporting channels as soon as possible.

5.

File a Police Complaint When Necessary

For serious cyber crimes, you can also go to the police and give them the details and evidence of what happened.

The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal says that an online complaint is not the same as a First Information Report (FIR).The local police will act based on the complaint you send them.

6.

Take Legal Advice

If the cyber crime causes a lot of money loss, involves blackmail, identity theft, hacking, harassment, or threats, it is a good idea to talk to a lawyer.

A lawyer can explain the laws that apply and what legal actions you can take.
